Build MVP App: Real Cost, Timeline and Who Should Build It

Build MVP app: compare no-code, freelancer, agency and a fixed-price build on cost, timeline and code ownership. Pick your route and book a call.

Table of Contents

There are four ways to build an MVP app: a no-code or AI builder, a freelancer, a traditional agency, or a fixed-price build like ours, Fixed at $3,460 for web, iOS and Android in about 20 days. The right route depends on three things: how much you can spend, how soon you must launch, and whether you need to own real code. This guide compares the four options on price, timeline and code ownership. Then it shows what a v1 should include so the price you're quoted is the price you pay. You can see what we build on our build an app page. Want a fixed price for your idea before you commit to anything? Book a call. It's a free 30-minute call. We look at your feature list and tell you the fastest version you can launch.

Who should build your MVP app? The 4 options compared

Here is how the four routes compare on how you pay, timeline, who runs the project, design, platforms, code ownership and what happens after launch.

  • No-code or AI builder. How you pay: platform plan plus your own time. Timeline: depends on your hours and the tool. Who runs the project: you. Design: templates. Web, iOS and Android: depends on the tool, so check that it can produce store builds. Code ownership: check the platform's export options. After launch: you fix it.
  • Freelancer. How you pay: hourly or per project. Timeline: depends on the person's availability. Who runs the project: you. Design: depends on their skills. Web, iOS and Android: depends on their skills. Code ownership: depends on the contract. After launch: depends on the agreement.
  • Traditional agency. How you pay: per their quote and terms. Timeline: set by their plan and your scope. Who runs the project: their team. Design: depends on the quote. Web, iOS and Android: depends on the quote. Code ownership: depends on the contract. After launch: depends on the contract.
  • BuildMVPFast. How you pay: Fixed at $3,460, agreed before any code. Timeline: about 20 days. Who runs the project: we do, and you see progress every week. Design: included. Web, iOS and Android: all three. Code ownership: 100% yours, on your GitHub. After launch: 2 weeks of fixes included.

No-code or AI builder

Good fit: you want to test demand before you spend real money. A clickable demo for ten customer conversations is a smart first step. The catch: the gap between a demo and a product people can download. Login, database security, payments and signed store builds still have to be built properly. One example: Bolt can generate React Native code through Expo and preview it in Expo Go, but it cannot produce the signed binary the App Store requires, as vp0.com explains in its guide to Bolt mobile apps. You do that step yourself. If you already have a prototype, read how we take an AI prototype to production before you rebuild from scratch.

Freelancer

Good fit: a small scope, and enough technical knowledge on your side to write a spec and review the work. What to check: the price (hourly or fixed), the delivery date, and who owns the code. If you pay by the hour, agree on a cap in writing. Ask for the repository on your own GitHub from day one, so the code stays yours whatever happens.

Traditional agency

Good fit: a large scope, strict compliance, or integrations with enterprise systems that need a full team. What to check: the same three things. Is the price fixed or an estimate? Is there a delivery date in the contract? Does the code land on your GitHub? Our guide on freelancer vs agency goes deeper on this choice.

A fixed-price MVP build

This is what we do. Some ideas need more than a standard v1. Our MVP development page lists them: "Marketplaces, AI features, HIPAA/fintech compliance, admin dashboards, multi-tenant SaaS." Fixed at $3,460 for the standard package below. If your idea needs one of these, we give a fixed quote before we start.

  • Core product features scoped for v1 launch
  • iOS, Android and responsive web
  • User authentication and onboarding
  • Stripe or other payment integration
  • Database and API setup
  • Mobile-first UI design
  • App Store and Google Play submission support
  • Full code ownership transferred to you
  • 2 weeks of post-launch bug-fix support

How much does it cost to build an MVP app?

Scope moves the price more than the type of builder does. A focused v1 with one user type and one core loop fits a fixed price. Our guide to MVP development cost covers the full breakdown. Whichever route you pick, you pay some running costs directly:

  • Apple Developer Program: 99 USD per year (Apple).
  • Google Play developer account: a one-time 25 USD registration fee (Google Play Console Help).
  • Hosting and services: database, email and payments, billed by each provider.

How long does it take to build an MVP app?

We deliver a focused MVP in about 20 days: a free call, a fixed quote, a build sprint with progress shown every week, then you ship. App store review comes after the build and nobody controls it, so leave some margin before your launch date. Our MVP timeline guide explains what speeds a build up and what slows it down. Not sure your idea fits a 20-day build? Book a call and we'll tell you on the call.

What to build in v1 so your MVP app stays on budget

Ask one question for each feature: if you removed it, could a user still get the main result? If they could, it goes to v2. Every v1 needs six building blocks: sign-up and onboarding, the core loop, payments if you charge, a database and API, a mobile-first design, and a way to get the app to users (the stores or a web link). Here is what founders usually cut, and what replaces it at launch:

  • Admin dashboard: manage data from the database console.
  • In-app chat: email or WhatsApp.
  • AI features: do the task manually at first.
  • Several user roles: launch with one user type.
  • Many social logins: email plus one provider.
  • Several languages: your main market's language only.
  • Offline mode: a clear "no connection" message.

Example: a fitness studio booking app

In v1, members see the schedule, book a class, pay for a membership with Stripe and get push reminders. The studio manages classes from the database console. The admin dashboard comes in v2.

Choosing how to build your MVP app: a decision grid

Use this grid to choose:

  • 1. You have no budget yet and need proof of demand. Start with a no-code or AI prototype and pre-sell it.
  • 2. You already have a working Lovable, Bolt or Cursor prototype. Get it audited and hardened instead of rebuilding blind.
  • 3. You need a real app in the stores before investor meetings or a launch date. Go with a fixed-price build with a set delivery date.
  • 4. You have a regulated product or enterprise integrations. Ask for a fixed quote for your scope, or work with a larger team.
  • 5. You're technical and your scope is tiny. Hire a freelancer, with the repository on your own GitHub.

Get three things in writing

Whoever builds it, get three things in writing: the price, the list of screens, and who owns the code. Our 7 questions to ask before you sign covers the rest. If you picked route 2 or 3, book a call. You'll get a fixed quote for your web, iOS and Android app before we write any code.

How much does it cost to build an MVP app?

It depends on scope more than on who builds it. With us, the standard MVP package for web, iOS and Android is Fixed at $3,460. Marketplaces, AI features, compliance and admin dashboards get a fixed quote before we start. Store accounts and hosting are paid separately.

How long does it take to build an MVP app?

We deliver a focused MVP in about 20 days. Plan extra time for App Store and Google Play review, which happens after the build.

Can I build an MVP app myself without coding?

Yes, for a prototype that tests demand. Getting to a secure app in the App Store and Google Play usually takes engineering work: login, database security, payments and signed builds.

Should I hire a freelancer or an agency for my MVP?

A freelancer fits a small scope when you can manage the work yourself. An agency fits when you want design, development and store launch handled by one team. Either way, ask for a fixed price, a delivery date and the code on your own GitHub. Want that fixed price for your own app? Book a call and bring your feature list.
