Build an MVP App: What to Include and Skip in v1 (2026)

Build an MVP App: What to Include and Skip in v1 (2026)

Build an MVP app with the right scope: what to include in v1, what to skip, three worked examples, and our price: Fixed at $3,460. Book a call.

Table of Contents

To build an MVP app, include only what one user needs to finish one core task: sign up, do the main thing, and pay you if you charge. Leave out admin dashboards, chat, AI features, extra roles and settings screens until real users ask for them. At BuildMVPFast, our price is Fixed at $3,460 for web, iOS and Android, delivered in around 20 days. This guide gives you the full include and skip lists, three examples of a wish list cut down to a v1, and the test to run on every feature. Already have a feature list? Book a call. In 30 minutes we'll go through it with you and mark which features belong in v1.

What an MVP app is (and what it is not)

An MVP app is the smallest version of your product that real users can use to solve one real problem. It is not a demo or a clickable prototype. People download it or open it, create an account and use it. An MVP is also not "the full app with fewer screens". It's one complete loop that works from start to finish. Ten half-built features teach you nothing. One finished feature that people use, or ignore, tells you what to build next. Run one test on every feature on your list: if you removed it, could a user still get the main result? If yes, it waits for v2.

What to include when you build an MVP app

Almost every MVP app needs the same six building blocks. With us, design is included, 100% of the code is yours on your GitHub, and you get 2 weeks of fixes after launch. See what the MVP development service covers. For each block, here is why it can't wait:

  • Sign up, log in and onboarding. Why it can't wait: without accounts you can't keep users or learn from them.
  • The core loop. Why it can't wait: the one task your app exists for. This is the product.
  • Payments (Stripe) if you charge. Why it can't wait: payment is the strongest proof your idea works.
  • Database and API. Why it can't wait: stores users and their data safely so v2 builds on it.
  • Mobile-first design. Why it can't wait: first impressions decide if testers come back.
  • A way for users to get it. Why it can't wait: a store listing or a web link. An app nobody can reach is not launched.

How to define your core loop

Write one sentence: "A (user) opens the app to (do one thing) and gets (one result)." Every screen in v1 should serve that sentence. If a screen doesn't, it's a candidate to skip. Three examples:

  • "A dog walker opens the app to log a walk and the owner gets a photo update."
  • "A tenant opens the app to report a repair and the landlord gets a ticket."
  • "A learner opens the app to finish a 5 minute lesson and gets a streak."

What to skip in v1 (and what to do instead)

These are the features founders most often put on their first list. Each one has a simpler stand-in that works fine for your first users. Skipping doesn't mean saying no forever. You add the feature when users prove they need it, and real usage shows you how to build it. Some items on that list, such as marketplaces, AI features and admin dashboards, are scoped with you on the call. Our feature cost guides explain what each one changes. Not sure where your idea lands? Book a call and bring your feature list. We'll mark each line "v1" or "later" with you. The features and what to do instead:

  • Admin dashboard. What to do in v1 instead: manage data directly in the database console. Build the dashboard once you know which actions you repeat daily.
  • In-app chat. What to do in v1 instead: use email, WhatsApp or a support inbox link.
  • AI features. What to do in v1 instead: do the "smart" step by hand for the first users, then automate what proves useful.
  • Several user roles. What to do in v1 instead: launch with one user type. Add managers, teams or sellers later.
  • Social login on every provider. What to do in v1 instead: start with email plus one provider your users actually use.
  • Multiple languages. What to do in v1 instead: launch in the language of your first market.
  • Referral program. What to do in v1 instead: share a promo code by hand.
  • Detailed settings screens. What to do in v1 instead: pick sensible defaults and let users ask for options.
  • Offline mode. What to do in v1 instead: show a clear "no connection" message.

Three examples: a full wish list cut down to a v1

In each case below, the v1 is still a real product people pay for. It just does one thing well.

A booking app for a fitness studio

Wish list: class schedule, booking, memberships, trainer profiles, chat with trainers, leaderboard, admin dashboard, push reminders.

  • v1: class schedule, booking, membership payment through Stripe, and a push reminder before class. The studio owner updates classes from the database console.
  • Later: leaderboard, trainer chat, a proper admin panel.

A field inspection app for a small business

Wish list: inspection checklists, photo upload, PDF reports, team roles, client portal, AI defect detection.

  • v1: one checklist flow with photos and a PDF report emailed to the client. One user type: the inspector.
  • Later: client portal, team roles, and AI only once you have enough real inspection photos.

A habit app for a coaching business

Wish list: habits, streaks, coach messaging, community feed, subscription, content library, Apple Watch app.

  • v1: daily habits, streaks, subscription, and a small content library the coach adds directly in the database.
  • Later: community feed, messaging, Watch app.

How scope decides your price

A tight scope is what makes a fixed price possible. Our price is Fixed at $3,460 for your app on web, iOS and Android, and you get a fixed quote before we start. On the call we check together what your v1 includes. Bigger scopes, such as marketplaces, AI features or compliance needs, are scoped with you on the call. For what drives the cost of each feature, read our MVP cost guides or try the MVP cost calculator. Also plan for the running costs that belong to you: Apple and Google developer accounts (check current fees on their sites), hosting, and any tools you choose.

How to keep your scope from drifting

To see what finished builds look like, browse our projects. Three habits keep your v1 on track:

  • Write every screen and flow down before the build starts.
  • Look at progress every week. With us, you see it weekly, so nothing drifts quietly.
  • When a new idea comes up mid-build, put it on the v2 list instead of squeezing it into v1.

How to start this week

Four steps, then book a call. We'll go through your list together, and you'll leave with a clear v1 scope.

  • 1. Write your core loop sentence.
  • 2. List every feature you want, then run the "could a user still get the result?" test on each.
  • 3. Move everything that fails into a "later" column.
  • 4. Bring the short list to a call.

How long does it take to build an MVP app?

A focused MVP app with one core loop takes around 20 days with BuildMVPFast. Larger scopes, like marketplaces or AI features, are discussed on the call.

How many features should an MVP app have?

As few as it takes for one user to finish one core task. In practice that means accounts, the core loop, payments if you charge, and a way for users to get the app. Everything else waits until users ask for it.

Should I build my MVP app for iOS, Android or web first?

You don't have to choose. Our MVP covers web, iOS and Android, so you can launch where your users already are.

Do I own the code of my MVP app?

Yes. 100% of the code is yours, on your own GitHub. You also get 2 weeks of fixes after launch.

What should I bring to a scoping call?

Your core loop sentence and your full feature list. We'll sort it into v1 and later with you.
