Build an MVP With AI or a Studio? A 5-Question Test to Decide
Validation MVP or launch MVP? Answer 5 yes/no questions to know if you should keep building alone with AI tools or hand your MVP to a studio.
Table of Contents
If your MVP only has to prove that people want your idea, build it yourself with AI coding tools. If real users will sign in, pay, or download it from an app store, hand it to a developer. The five questions below tell you which case you're in, in about two minutes. Most founders don't get stuck on choosing a tool. They get stuck because they don't know what their MVP has to prove. Once that's clear, the choice between building alone and hiring a studio usually makes itself. Want a second opinion on your answers? Book a call. In 30 minutes, we'll go through your feature list with you and tell you which side of the line you're on.

Validation MVP vs launch MVP: two different jobs
"MVP" gets used for two different things. Mixing them up is the most common reason founders waste months.
- A validation MVP answers one question: "Does anyone want this?" It only has to look real enough for people to sign up, click through or pre-order. It doesn't need to be secure, fast or ready to grow.
- A launch MVP answers a different question: "Will people use this and pay for it?" Real users sign in, enter their data, pay and come back. It has to work every time, on their phones, with their money.
Validation MVP and launch MVP side by side
AI coding tools are very good at the first job and unreliable at the second. The trap is a validation MVP that works and gets traction, so you keep adding prompts until it's meant to be a launch MVP. It was never built for that. Here is how the two compare:
- Question it answers. Validation MVP: does anyone want this? Launch MVP: will people use it and pay?
- Who uses it. Validation MVP: people you show it to. Launch MVP: strangers who find it.
- Data. Validation MVP: fake or your own. Launch MVP: real personal data.
- Money. Validation MVP: none, or a pre-order form. Launch MVP: real payments.
- What failure costs you. Validation MVP: a lesson. Launch MVP: users, trust, sometimes a deadline.
- Good fit for. Validation MVP: you, with AI tools. Launch MVP: a developer or a studio.
The 5-question test
Answer each question with yes or no. Be honest about v1, not about where you hope to be in a year.
1. Will strangers create accounts and store personal data in the app?
Your own test data is one thing. Names, emails, health details or business records from people you've never met are another. Once that happens, someone has to make sure each user only sees their own data. That decision isn't made for you when you prompt a screen into existence. Example: a habit tracker where each person logs their routine is a yes. A calculator that runs in the browser and saves nothing is a no.
2. Will money move through the app in v1?
Selling through a separate pre-order page doesn't count. Paying inside the app does. Subscriptions, refunds, failed cards and renewals all need to behave correctly. If they don't, a bug costs you real money and trust.
3. Does it need to be in the App Store or Google Play?
A web link is enough to validate an idea. If your users expect to download an app, or your launch depends on being in the stores, you're building a product that goes through a review process and has to work on real devices.
4. Has a fix in the last week broken something that used to work?
This is the clearest sign that a prototype has outgrown how it was built. If every change feels risky, the code isn't a safe base to keep building on, and each new feature makes the next one harder.

5. Is there a date you can't move?
A launch event, a demo day, an investor meeting or a partner rollout. Without a fixed date, building alone costs you time. With one, a missed week can cost you the opportunity.
How to read your score
Count your yes answers. If you're at three or more, book a call and bring your prototype link. A working prototype is the best spec a founder can bring: it shows the screens, the flows and the words you want.
- Zero or one yes: keep building alone. You're still validating. A landing page, a clickable demo or a simple tool is enough to put in front of people. Paying a studio now means paying to build something nobody has asked for yet. If you're unsure the idea holds up, try our free app idea validator first.
- Two yes: finish validating, then plan the handover. You're close to the line. Get your proof of demand, then decide before you invite real users. Don't wait until something breaks in front of them.
- Three or more yes: a developer pays off now. You need a launch MVP. Each extra week of patching a prototype that wasn't built for production makes the move more expensive later.
The test applied to three founders
Here is how the score plays out in three common situations:
- A founder with an idea and no users yet. No accounts, no payments, no store, nothing breaking, no deadline. Score: 0. The right move is a landing page and a clickable demo in front of 20 people from the target market. Watch who asks "when can I use it?"
- A founder whose AI prototype already has interest. People are signing up (yes), they'll pay a subscription (yes), and the last two changes broke the onboarding screen (yes). Score: 3. Demand is proven, but the prototype wasn't made for real accounts or real money. The question now is whether to harden it or rebuild it on a clean base. Our guides on Lovable and AI builders and the AI prototype to production page cover that choice.
- A founder raising a round. Investors want to see an app in the stores (yes), with real users (yes), before a pitch date that can't move (yes). Score: 3. Go to a developer straight away. If you're comparing build options while preparing a raise, the investor and fundraising guides go further.

What is the difference between a validation MVP and a launch MVP?
A validation MVP tests whether people want your idea. It can use fake data and doesn't need to handle payments. A launch MVP is used by real people who sign in, store their data and often pay. It has to be reliable, secure and ready for the app stores if your users expect a download.
Can I build an MVP with AI tools and no coding experience?
Yes, for a validation MVP. A landing page, a clickable demo or a simple single-user tool is within reach for a non-technical founder. It gets harder once you need secure accounts, payments or mobile apps, because those need decisions the tools don't make for you.
Can a studio use the prototype I built with AI?
Often, yes, at least as a reference. Some prototypes can be kept and hardened, others are faster to rebuild while keeping your screens and flows. Looking at the code tells you which one applies before you commit.
