MVP Development Cost for an Edtech or Online Course App in 2026: Video, Progress Tracking, Payments and Admin Priced Line by Line
What an edtech or online course MVP costs in 2026, feature by feature: what fits a $3,460 fixed price, what needs a custom quote, and how to cut it.
Table of Contents
Our fixed-price MVP is Fixed at $3,460. It covers sign-up, Stripe payments, the database and a mobile-first UI on iOS, Android and the web. We scope the course features on the call. Those are the catalog, video lessons and progress tracking. Four things always move an edtech app to a custom quote: a full admin dashboard, an instructor marketplace, AI features, and selling to schools as separate organisations. A custom quote is still a fixed price, and we agree on it before we write any code. Most cost guides for education apps give you one wide range for the whole app. This guide goes feature by feature. For each feature, you'll see whether it's in the fixed price, scoped on the call or a custom quote. You'll also see how to keep it small for v1. Have a course app idea and a feature list? Book a call. In 30 minutes we'll tell you which version of your idea fits the fixed price.

The edtech MVP, line by line
Each line below gives the feature, whether it's in the fixed price, scoped on the call or a custom quote, and how to keep it in v1. "Scoped on the call" means we look at your exact flows before we quote. The smaller you keep the v1 version, the easier it is to keep the whole app at one fixed number. The sections after this list explain the lines founders ask about most.
- Sign-up, login, onboarding. In the fixed price. For v1: email or social login, one learner profile.
- Payments (one-off or subscription). In the fixed price, via Stripe. For v1: one pricing model for launch.
- Database and API. In the fixed price. For v1: one data model for courses, lessons and learners.
- Mobile-first UI on iOS, Android and web. In the fixed price. For v1: one clean design, the same on every platform.
- Course catalog and lesson pages. Scoped on the call. For v1: one catalog, courses split into modules and lessons.
- Video lessons. Scoped on the call. For v1: videos hosted by a video provider, played in the app.
- Progress tracking. Scoped on the call. For v1: "Completed" per lesson, a progress bar per course.
- Quizzes. Scoped on the call. For v1: multiple choice with an instant score.
- Push reminders. Scoped on the call. For v1: one reminder, "You haven't finished lesson 3".
- Certificates. Scoped on the call. For v1: one PDF template with name, course and date.
- Full admin dashboard. Custom quote. For v1: add content through a simple back office or by hand.
- Instructor marketplace. Custom quote. For v1: you publish all courses yourself first.
- AI tutor or AI-generated quizzes. Custom quote. For v1: launch without it, add it once learners show up.
- Schools as separate organisations. Custom quote. For v1: sell to individuals or one pilot school first.
- Live classes. Custom quote. For v1: link out to a video call tool you already use.
Video lessons: host them, don't build a video platform
Founders worry about video more than any other feature. The video player in your app is not the hard part. The hard part is storage, encoding and streaming to every phone on every connection. For an MVP, you don't want to build any of that. Your videos live on a video hosting provider and the app plays them. We scope how playback works in your app on the call. Two things to know before the call:
- Hosting is a running cost. The provider bills you directly, based on how much video you store and stream. Check their pricing page before you upload your full library.
- Offline downloads add scope. Saving lessons on the phone for offline viewing means handling storage, expiry and access rights. Leave it for v2 unless your learners often have no connection, for example on a commute or out in the field.
Progress tracking: keep it to completion
Progress tracking makes a course app feel like more than a folder of videos. We scope this on the call. Streaks, badges, leaderboards and detailed per-learner analytics each add screens and logic. Pick the one your course really needs, or wait until learners ask for them. In v1 it can stay simple:
- A lesson is marked complete when the learner finishes it or taps "Done".
- Each course shows a progress bar.
- The home screen opens on "Continue where you left off".
Payments: decide where you sell before you build
Stripe is in the fixed price. The real question for edtech is where the purchase happens. Many course founders sell on the web and let paying learners log in to the app. On the call, we check your case against the current store rules before the build starts. That way App Store review holds no surprises. Want to know which payment setup fits your course? Book a call and bring your pricing model. The two places you can sell:
- On the web: Stripe checkout, one-off or subscription.
- Inside the iOS or Android app: Apple and Google have their own rules for digital content sold inside apps, and courses are digital content. Depending on your market and model, you may need in-app purchases, which usually go through a tool like RevenueCat.
Admin: why it adds scope
A full admin dashboard is one of our custom quote triggers. In edtech, it's the feature founders ask for most, because someone has to upload the courses. A real course admin is a second product. It needs course and lesson editing, video uploads, quiz building, learner lists, refunds and reports. Each of these is a set of screens with its own rules.
Admin: how to cut it
Three ways to launch without a full course admin:
- Start with a few courses. A small catalog at launch doesn't need a full editor on day one. We scope how your first content gets into the app on the call.
- Use a simple back office. Editing rows in the database interface (Supabase) is enough for a small team adding a lesson each week.
- Build the admin in v2. Once you know which reports you actually check, the admin is smaller and easier to scope.

Three edtech ideas that need a custom quote, and their smaller v1
Each of these ideas needs a custom quote. Each one also has a smaller v1:
- 1. A course marketplace. Instructors sign up, upload courses and get paid, and learners buy from them. That means two user types plus payouts. Smaller v1: publish your own courses first, then invite instructors later.
- 2. A platform for schools. Each school has its own teachers, classes and learners, kept separate. That setup is called multi-tenant, and it needs a custom quote. Smaller v1: run a pilot with one school, set up as a single group.
- 3. An AI tutor. A chat that answers questions about the lesson. Smaller v1: launch the course without it, then add AI once you see which questions learners actually ask.
If your app is for children
If your app is for children, tell us on the call. The stores have stricter rules for children's apps, and so does the law on their data. That changes the scope.
How to get a fixed number for your edtech app
You can see apps we've built in our projects. For what single features cost in other app types, browse the feature costs topic. Here is how it works:
- 1. Free call (30 minutes). You walk us through the idea and the feature list.
- 2. Fixed quote. We write down the flows and send one price: either our fixed-price MVP, Fixed at $3,460, or a custom fixed quote.
- 3. Build sprint. You see progress every week.
- 4. You ship. We help you submit to the App Store and Google Play. The code goes on your GitHub, then you get 2 weeks of fixes.

How much does an edtech MVP cost in 2026?
Our fixed-price MVP is Fixed at $3,460. It covers sign-up, Stripe payments, the database and a mobile-first UI on iOS, Android and the web. We scope course features like the catalog, video lessons and progress tracking on the call. A full admin dashboard, an instructor marketplace, AI features or a setup for several schools need a custom fixed quote.
Can I host my course videos inside the app?
Your videos stay with a video hosting provider and the app plays them. That keeps the build small. The provider bills you directly for hosting.
Do I have to use Apple in-app purchases for my courses?
It depends on where and how you sell. Courses count as digital content, and Apple and Google have their own rules for digital content. We check your model against the current store rules before the build, so the app passes review.
How long does it take to build an online course app?
We deliver our fixed-price MVP in about 20 days and show you progress every week. A custom quote comes with its own timeline, which we agree on before the build starts.
