What Is Stripe Connect? Marketplace Payments Explained for Founders
Split payments, seller onboarding, platform fees, and Express vs Custom accounts — everything you need before building a marketplace.
Table of Contents
Stripe Connect is how platforms move money between buyers and sellers while taking a cut — Instacart, Shopify, Lyft all use it. If you're building a two-sided marketplace, Connect isn't optional unless you want to become a money transmitter (you don't).
How Connect Works (Simple Version)
Buyer pays $100. Stripe charges the card. Platform keeps $15 commission. Seller receives $85 (minus Stripe fees). KYC, payouts, and tax forms handled by Stripe depending on account type.
Express vs Custom vs Standard
Express: Stripe-hosted seller onboarding — best for most MVPs. Custom: fully branded, you manage compliance — expensive. Standard: sellers use own Stripe accounts — least control. For MVPs, Express is the default.
- Express: 1–2 weeks integration, Stripe handles KYC
- Custom: 4–8 weeks, full UX control
- Standard: rare for consumer marketplaces
MVP Scope for Connect
Minimum: seller signup, listing, buyer checkout, split payment, seller payout dashboard. Defer: escrow, instant payouts, multi-currency, dispute automation. Marketplace MVPs with Connect typically run $5,800–$10,000 fixed — not $3,460 lean scope.
