Decision guide
AI Builder vs Agency
Short answer: use an AI builder to learn the flow. Use a production team (agency, freelancer, or hire) when you need owned code, stores, tenant-safe data, or a deadline that cannot be “one more prompt.” An agency is one option — not the hero of every story.
Criteria
Stay on the builder if the next milestone is conversations and nobody is paying. Leave if the next milestone is App Store, a SOC2 questionnaire, or another engineer joining. Money and stores force production engineering. Curiosity does not.
- →Builder: hours, low cost, throwaway OK
- →Freelancer: you manage, cheaper if you can spec
- →Agency: they own the sprint and the punch list
- →Hire: slowest start, best if this is the company
The expensive middle
Paying monthly for a builder while promising investors it is the product. You get lock-in and still need a rebuild. Price the exit early.
FAQ
Is an agency always better than Cursor?
No. A technical founder with Cursor plus a checklist can ship. An agency is for when you need a team and a date.
