Before you build
How to Validate an App Idea Before Development
Building is the expensive way to test a sentence. Validate the problem and the willingness to change behavior (or pay) before you fund a 21-day sprint. This is the sequence we ask founders to run — including the ones who still hire us afterward.
Talk to people who have the problem
Ten conversations beat a hundred landing-page visits with no intent. Ask what they do today, what they already pay for, and what they tried that failed. Do not pitch your app until the last third of the call. If you cannot find ten people, you do not have a distribution problem yet — you have a 'who is this for' problem.
A landing page is a test, not a company
A clear headline, one CTA, and an email capture can tell you if the promise is interesting. It cannot tell you if the workflow will retain. Treat signups as a conversation list, not proof of product-market fit.
Fake door and concierge tests
Sell the outcome manually: a Notion board, a WhatsApp workflow, a spreadsheet ops process. If nobody will go through the awkward version, they will not wait for your polished app. Marketplace founders should recruit supply first. That is still validation.
When you should stop validating and build
You can describe the job. A few people will use an ugly version. You know what v1 excludes. Then an MVP is cheaper than another month of hypotheticals — because you need retention data, not more opinions.
What we will not pretend
We do not sell 'guaranteed validation.' We build the product so you can learn from real usage. If the idea is still a vibe, spend on interviews first. We would rather lose a project than ship something nobody asked for.
FAQ
Do I need a technical co-founder to validate?
No. You need access to users. Technical help matters when you are ready to instrument a real product.
Is a no-code prototype enough?
For learning the flow, yes. For App Store distribution, payments at scale, or handing to an engineer, usually no. See MVP vs prototype.
Can you help with validation and then build?
We can pressure-test scope on a call. Deep research retainers are not our default offer — shipping the MVP is.
