Custom App or Shopify in 2026? How to Choose Between 3 Options
Custom app or stay on Shopify? Compare 3 options, see when each one fits and what a fixed-price MVP includes. Book a call, then get a fixed quote.
Table of Contents
Stay on Shopify if your buyers mostly purchase once and your mobile site converts. Build an app connected to Shopify if you already sell there and need push notifications or repeat buyers. Build a standalone app only if your model doesn't fit a standard store, like delivery slots, rentals, B2B pricing or a marketplace. Our fixed-price MVP starts at $3,460 and ships in about 21 days. That includes screens, backend and App Store and Google Play submission. Shopify integration and a custom admin are scoped on the call, and the quote is fixed. Anything bigger gets its timeline written into the quote. The scope depends less on the app and more on one decision: who runs the products, the payments and the orders? Shopify or your own app? Get this right and the build stays small. Get it wrong and you either pay to rebuild what Shopify already does, or you force your business into a store model that doesn't fit. Not sure which one fits you? Book a call. We'll look at your store or your idea with you. Then you get a fixed quote before any work starts.

The three options, in plain terms
There are three options, not two.
- 1. Stay on Shopify, no app. Your customers buy from your Shopify store in their phone's browser. You build nothing.
- 2. An app connected to Shopify. A native iOS and Android app that reads your products, cart and orders from your store. Shopify's Storefront API is built for custom storefronts and mobile apps. Shopify also offers Checkout Kit, which runs its checkout inside a mobile app.
- 3. A standalone app. The app keeps its own catalog in its own database. It takes payments through a provider like Stripe, and you get an admin to manage products and orders.
The three options side by side
The three options compared point by point.
- Products and stock. Shopify store only: Shopify. App connected to Shopify: Shopify. Standalone app: your own database.
- Checkout. Shopify store only: Shopify. App connected to Shopify: Shopify, inside the app. Standalone app: your own flow, with Stripe.
- Orders and admin. Shopify store only: Shopify admin. App connected to Shopify: Shopify admin. Standalone app: an admin you build.
- Taxes, discounts, shipping. Shopify store only: Shopify settings. App connected to Shopify: Shopify settings. Standalone app: your own logic.
- Push notifications, app icon on the phone. Shopify store only: no. App connected to Shopify: yes. Standalone app: yes.
- Build work. Shopify store only: none. App connected to Shopify: mostly screens and the integration. Standalone app: screens, backend and admin.
When staying on Shopify is enough
Don't build an app just to have one. If that's you, put the budget into traffic and product instead. Your Shopify store is enough if:
- Most of your buyers come once, from ads or search, and then leave.
- You have no reason to bring people back every week.
- Your mobile site already converts and loads fast.
When an app connected to Shopify is the right call
Build on top of Shopify when you already sell there and need something the browser does badly. Shopify still handles products, stock, taxes, discounts and orders, so your team doesn't have to learn a new admin. The build is mostly screens plus one solid integration.
- Push notifications for drops, restocks or limited editions.
- Repeat buyers who would open an app more often than a bookmark.
- App-only perks, like early access for members.
When a standalone app makes sense
Go standalone when the standard store model gets in your way. In this case the backend and the admin hold real business logic, and that's where most of the work goes. Want a straight answer for your case? Book a call and we'll tell you which option fits before you commit to anything.
- Local delivery with time slots and stock that changes every day.
- Rentals, bookings or custom orders, where the "product" isn't a fixed item.
- B2B ordering with per-client prices or invoices.
- A marketplace with several sellers.
Two scenarios
These are examples, not client projects. They show how the same "e-commerce app" request can lead to two very different builds.
Scenario A: a clothing brand already on Shopify
A clothing brand sells on Shopify and wants an app to announce new drops with push notifications. The app reads the catalog through the Storefront API, and Shopify checkout opens inside the app. Orders, stock and refunds stay in Shopify admin, so there's no custom admin to build. The integration is scoped on the call.
Scenario B: a grocery delivery startup with no store
A local grocery delivery startup has no store yet. It needs its own catalog with stock that changes every day, delivery slots and Stripe payments. All of that lives in the app's own backend. Staff also need an admin dashboard to prepare orders, and as our MVP development page says, admin dashboards are quoted separately. Both are "e-commerce apps", but the amount of work is very different. What decides it is who owns the products, the payments and the orders.

What the fixed price includes
Marketplaces, AI features, admin dashboards and third-party integrations like Shopify get their own fixed quote. There are no discovery fees, and you own 100% of the GitHub repo. The base MVP covers:
- Core features scoped for v1
- iOS, Android and responsive web
- Sign up and onboarding
- Stripe payment integration
- Database and API setup
- Mobile-first UI design
- App Store and Google Play submission support
- Full code ownership, with handoff documentation
- Two weeks of bug fixes after launch
One App Store rule that works for you
This Apple rule helps you whichever option you pick. Under Apple's guidelines, apps that sell physical goods, or services used outside the app, must use payment methods other than in-app purchase. So a shop selling clothes or groceries uses Shopify checkout, Stripe or Apple Pay, and doesn't pay Apple's in-app purchase commission on those sales.
How we help you decide
We work in four steps: a free call, a fixed quote, a build sprint, then you ship. On the call we ask three questions. Do you already sell on Shopify? Does your model fit a standard store? What does v1 need to prove? Then we tell you which option fits, and you get a fixed price and a timeline. Delivery times for real apps are listed on our projects page. For example, Pouch Watch shipped on iOS and Android in 14 days, Sober Bet on iOS and Android in 20 days, and Porteiro on web, iOS and Android in 24 days. Bigger projects on that page took longer, and each one had its timeline set before the build started. For costs feature by feature, browse our feature cost articles. Should I build a custom app or stay on Shopify?
Stay on Shopify if most buyers purchase once and your mobile site converts well. Add an app connected to Shopify if you need push notifications or repeat buyers. Go standalone only if your model doesn't fit a standard store, like delivery slots, rentals or a marketplace.
Is an app connected to Shopify cheaper than a standalone app?
It depends on your scope. With a connected app, Shopify already handles the catalog, checkout, stock, taxes and orders, so the app is mostly screens and the integration. A standalone app also needs its own backend logic and an admin dashboard, and the dashboard is quoted separately from the MVP base. You get a fixed quote after the call.
How long does it take?
The base MVP ships in about 21 days, with screens, backend and App Store and Google Play submission support included. Shopify integrations, admin dashboards and marketplaces can take longer. Your fixed quote confirms the timeline.
Do I have to use Apple in-app purchase to sell products in my app?
No. Under Apple's guidelines, physical goods and services used outside the app must use other payment methods, such as Shopify checkout, Stripe or Apple Pay.
Can I add more features after launch?
Yes. You own the code, so any team can keep building on it. If you want us to ship version two, see our continuous support service.
